ALT-WEBRING TERMS OF SERVICE
INTRODUCTION
This is a living document, as circumstances change so it will too. Any changes will be
advised on the alt-webring home page and via the newsletter
so you can come here to review them.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR CONTENT
It is our policy to offer Open, and relatively unrestricted access to our service, with
regard to the type of content allowed with the exceptions noted in
Appendix A.
The Service provided by the alt-webring system allows related web sites a means to link
together into easily navigable groupings referred to as Webrings. While we provide the basic
navigation system for these member webrings, each home page for a webrings is hosted on a
different server owned and operated by another person who is known as the Ringmaster.
The alt-webring system has no control over, access to, or responsibility for the content
found on these web pages, member websites of the webrings, or the associated admin pages
for these webrings, including images, links, trademarked material and/or other content.
Because of this, by using our system and viewing member webrings or their member web sites,
you understand and agree that you may be exposed to images and other material that you may
find objectionable, indecent, or otherwise offensive.
If the content or material found on a member webrings or one of it's member web sites concerns
you, the procedure to follow is firstly to contact the
Ringmaster of the webrings in question to discuss the offending material. If an impasse is
reached the alt-webring owner will arbitrate the matter and make a final decision.
Due to possibility of exposure to adult or mature content, and the collection of personal
information (name, e-mail address, and year of birth), we do not allow children under the age
of 14 to create or join a webrings hosted on the alt-webring system.
This in no way means that children under the age of 14 may not navigate the webrings that are
hosted on this system or it's members web sites, or that they cannot visit the
alt-webring Directory to find your webrings. It just means they cannot create their own
ring, or become a member of one of our member rings.
CONTENT OWNERSHIP
For Content you make available through webrings hosted by the alt-webring system, including
descriptions, links and images, you grant the alt-webring system the world-wide, royalty free
and non-exclusive license to reproduce and publish such Content, for the sole purpose of
promoting the Service itself. This license remains in effect only for as long as you continue
to include such Content on the Service and will end at the time you delete such Content from
the Service.
In plain English, this means you retain the copyright on all your content, but you grant us the
right to use it in order to publicize the service if and when we acquire sponsors. This doesn't
mean we will use your graphics or content, it means we can use your ring as an example or
mention your webring to prospective sponsors. What is yours, should remain yours!
RESERVED RIGHTS AND INDEMNITY
You agree to indemnify and hold the alt-webring system, and its affiliates and agents harmless
from any claim, liability, loss, or demand, including reasonable attorneys' fees due to or
arising out of content you make available through the Service, your use of the Service, your
connection to the Service, your violation of these Terms of Service, or your violation of any
rights of another.
We also reserve the following rights:
- To deny, remove or block any Webring and Webring Information from the Service with notice,
for any reason, including tampering or interfering with the function of the Service, violation
of these Terms of Service, and lack of use.
- To remove, adopt, maintain, or reassign any Webring and Webring
information that appears to have been abandoned. Any webrings that
has no members and/or has had no Ringmaster activity for a 60 day
period will be considered as being abandoned.
- To modify or discontinue this Service for any reason, either temporarily or permanently,
without notice. You agree that the alt-webring system shall not be liable to you or to any
third party for any modification, suspension or discontinuance of the Service.
- Upon leaving the Service, Ring Members and Ringmasters agree to remove all alt-webring system
related data, including links supplied by the alt-webring system, and trademarks from their
web site/s.
DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTY
The alt-webring system makes no representations about the suitability of this service or about
any content or information made accessible by the service, for any purpose. The service is
provided "AS IS" without express or implied warranties, including warranties of
merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose.
The alt-webring system makes no warranty that:
- The service will meet your requirements.
- That the service will be uninterrupted, timely, secure, or error-free.
LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
The alt-webring system and any of its agents shall not be held liable under any theory for any
damages suffered by you or any user of the service, including but not limited to, damages for
loss of profits, goodwill, use, data, or other losses (even if you have advised us of the
possibility of such damages), resulting from:
- The use or the inability to use the service,
- Unauthorized or accidental loss or alteration of your data or transmission, or
- Any other matter (wars, floods, acts of God or just plain bad luck) relating to the service.
LISTING IN RING DIRECTORY
The only webrings that will be listed in the Ring
Directory will be those with three or more member sites. This
is an effort to keep alt-webring useful for the general browsing
public. The basic problem is that rings with less than three member
sites are not very useful, there's not much for visitors to look
at. Quite a few of them also do not have a ring homepage, this makes
them even less interesting for people! ;-)
Up until 28 April 2006, all rings on the alt-webring system have
been listed on the Ring Directory page, regardless of the number
of member sites in them. On that date the listing policy was changed
so that only rings with three or more sites are listed on the directory
page.
Please note that rings with less than three member sites won't
be deleted, they will still be on the system but they won't appear
on the Ring Directory page until they have three or more member
sites.
WEBRING NAVIGATION PANEL/RING HOME PAGE
Webrings hosted on the alt-webring system may be removed without
notice if the following two points are not observed:
1. Every webring on the alt-webring system must have a ring home
page, if you don't know what this is, or need help to make one,
instructions are here.
2. If the ringmaster owns a member site in their webring, they must
place the ring navigation panel onto their website within two weeks
of joining the webring. After all, if the ringmaster cannot do this
promptly, how can they expect their member sites to comply?
COMMERCIAL WEBRINGS
Webrings created for commercial websites are welcomed, but with
the following provisos:
1. Member sites cannot be restricted to those belonging to the ringmaster
only - you must allow other sites to join your webring.
2. alt-webring is NOT an advertising service - you cannot use your
ring's description field or logo as advertising space.
ALT-WEBRING MAILING LIST
Upon the creation of a new webrings, your name will be added to
our mailing list. This mailing list is used ONLY to keep Ringmasters
informed of upcoming alt-webring system changes, updates or other
important ring-related information. This list will NOT be abused
and your information will not be sold. Every effort will be made
to keep your information private.
APPENDIX A
Although we do not actively monitor Content of our hosted webrings,
we do try to be very broad in what will be allowed in the alt-webring
system. We do however automatically forbid the following types of
Content and action will be taken to remove the offending site or
to close the associated ring:
Promoting or conducting illegal activities
Such information if found, will not be tolerated and will be reported
to the appropriate authorities.
Gambling
The alt-webring system is intended to be a gambling-free zone. Gambling
is defined as "playing a game of chance for money". Games
of chance are okay but once money is involved you're not welcome
here.
Child Pornography
Yes this does fall under the 'illegal activities' statement above,
but it bears emphasizing. If any Content is found to even remotely
promote child pornography, or otherwise promoting the exploitation
or abuse of children, we will happily report the offending person
to the proper authorities in extreme haste.
Adult Content
The alt-webring system is intended to be suitable for all ages.
RingMasters who create rings here and WebMasters who join their
sites to rings are responsible for their ring or site Content. No
overt nudity or pornography is allowed on the alt-webring system,
tasteful nudity is allowed. The guiding principle is to ask yourself..."Would
I really like my ten year old child to see this".
Racial/Religious/Sexual Hatred or Bigotry
We strongly support free speech and individual liberties. We are
exercising ours by declining to host such material. If you want
to promote such beliefs, it is your right but you aren't allowed
to do it here.
Spam and Link Farm rings
We hate spam at alt-webring. With a passion. Rings that are created
to blatantly advertise products, rig search engine rankings or are
just obnoxious will be removed. An example of this is a ring that
might consist of multiple virtually-identical websites all made
and operated by the same person or company. They are also usually
characterised by none of the member sites having navigation panels
(or the panels are buried) and a non-existent ring join/home page.

Note: By clicking the "I agree" link and registering a ring ID you are in
acceptance of the terms and agreements of this Webring Hosting Service.
Note: After registering your new webrings, you will receive a confirmation e-mail. If you
do not receive this e-mail within a reasonable amount of time, or do not see your webrings
listed when clicking on ring management (Ring admin), please resubmit your information.
